Skullets to dreads, it was bad hair year

The Boston Globe by Christopher Muther
History, naturally, will remember 2008 as a year that was filled with events of epic scope — the election of our first African-American president, an economic collapse of Brobdingnagian proportions, automakers asking Washington for money the way a teenager grovels for an advance on his allowance.
But those of us who survived 2008 will remember it for something much more troubling: bad man hair.
Not since Phil Collins sported a ridiculous comb-forward and sang about a girl named Sussudio and Donald Trump's "The Art of the Deal" topped the best-seller list have we seen such a blatant display of bad hair on high-profile men.
Whether it was the wrong hair products or the wrong cut, there was no shortage of unwanted looks in 2008. Here's an eyeful of the year's top offenders.
Robert Pattinson — The 'Twilight" star became the object of unbridled teen lust, partially because his untamed rat's nest of a coiffure had the supernatural power to make young girls scream. Over studio objections, Pattinson finally chopped off his unwieldy mop and proved he's mortal after all.

Directors and studios sharing economic pressure
06 Jan 2009 | Comments (0) |
Reuters By Tom Roston
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Catherine Hardwicke had every reason to celebrate as her latest film, "Twilight," opened to nearly $70 million in November.
The haul exceeded even the most optimistic expectations, and reviewers credited Hardwicke for breathing cinematic life into novelist Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance. But when Summit Entertainment immediately began fast-tracking a sequel, "New Moon," Hardwicke was conspicuously absent.
The director had concerns about the direction of the new franchise and the amount of prep time available. Summit, by some accounts, had reservations about working with the indie-minded Hardwicke again. The studio soon announced it would hire another director, Chris Weitz, to ensure its follow-up film would be ready by November.
An isolated instance of financial dictates undercutting a director's power? Perhaps. But there is evidence this awards season that the challenging economy is forcing studios to take tougher stands when it comes to keeping directors happy.

PATTINSON'S MUSIC AMBITIONS
06 Jan 2009 | Comments (0) |
Contact Music
TWILIGHT star ROBERT PATTINSON isn't worried if offers of acting jobs dry up - he'd happily turn his hand to a career in music. The actor trained at a theatre school in London, and is already looking to future career ventures. He tells the Los Angeles Times, "Music is my back-up plan if acting fails. I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket." Two of Pattinson's compositions are included on the soundtrack to the hit vampire movie - but the actor insists he wasn't trying to "cash in" by launching a music career on the back of the tracks. He adds, "That's what I was scared about, it looks like I'm trying to get a music career out of it or something. I'm not going to be doing any music videos or anything."

Ashley Greene Eager To ‘Shrink’ Sundance With Kevin Spacey
06 Jan 2009 | Comments (0) |
MTV by Larry Carroll
As we turn the calendar page, MTV is spending this entire week looking forward to the most promising films of 2009. Keep checking back for lists of our most anticipated blockbusters, comedies and so forth – but today we kick off the festivities with a very special list: The 10 Most Eagerly Anticipated 2009 Films From the “Twilight” Stars.
One of the entrants is “Shrink,” an under-the-radar indie that began building buzz recently when it was chosen for this month’s Sundance Film Festival. Within hours, Twilighters began wondering about this dramedy that stars not only Kevin Spacey and Keke Palmer, but their very own Ashley Greene.
“’Shrink’ I did a while ago. I’m excited that it’s going,” explained the artist sometimes known as Alice Cullen when we caught up with her recently. “But we all had an idea that it would – the cast is amazing.”
Die-hard Twilighters are already making plans to trek to Park City to see the first showings of the film (and KStew’s “Adventureland”), which made the appreciative actress’ smile grow even larger than usual. “I’ve got my own fanbase; that’s amazing!” she laughed. “That’s why I love my life right now.”
She did, however, caution such fans that her “Shrink” appearance is a brief one. “It’s really not a large part at all,” Greene revealed. “I met with the director, and I didn’t get the original part I was going out for. But he liked me enough and was nice enough to put me in the film as a character named Lucy.”
In the film, Spacey plays a psychiatrist to some of Hollywood’s top stars and agents – and on the periphery of his la-la-land friends and patients, Greene’s character comes into play. “You see her in [the Hollywood talent agency] CAA, and there’s this whole thing about a Hardee’s commercial girl. It’s very bizarre,” she said. “But I’m excited to be a part of it, with such a great cast.”
And that cast is top-lined by the double Oscar winner who created Verbal Kint, Lester Burnham, Jack Vincennes and others. “I’ll be starstruck, because I didn’t get to actually meet Kevin,” Greene revealed. “When I was working, my scene wasn’t with him. I’ll feel like one of his little fans.”
That is, if she can make it to Sundance to help promote “Shrink” in the middle of her busy schedule shooting “Warrior” (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/12/19/twilight-siblings-ashley-greene-and-kellan-lutz-reunite-as-love-interests-in-warrior/) opposite Kellan Lutz. “I’m going to try [to get to Park City] if it doesn’t conflict with the film I’m doing now,” she explained, promising she’d meet up with MTV if she gets up there. “My manager is going and has a house up there, and we’re planning on going. If possible, I want to go at least for a day or two, if not the whole time.”

Gigwise by Jason Gregory
He's a rap fan...
Robert Pattinson, star of teen vampire movie Twilight, has revealed that US rapper Emimen was one of his heroes as a youngster.
The 22-year-old actor told the BBC he admired Eminem because he was “really into rap”. He also spoke fondly of Jay Kay from Jamiroquai.
Pattinson, who is currently preparing to shoot the next movie in the Twilight series, spoke candidly in a recent interview about his interest in music.
“Music is my backup plan if acting fails,” he told the LA Times. “I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket.”
Two of Pattinson's own original compositions are included on the soundtrack to Twilight. But the actor stressed that he didn't want fans to think he was trying “cash in” on the movie's success.
“That’s what I was scared about, it looks like I’m trying to get a music career out of it or something,” he said. “I’m not going to be doing any music videos or anything.

Check Out Line: The year of the vampire

Check Out the top products on Amazon.com. Amazon.com just came out with its “best of” lists for 2008. Since Amazon is best known for selling books (even though it offers everything from groceries to jewelry these days), we thought you might want to know which titles were the hottest this year.
No surprise to tween girls or their parents, the best-selling book was “Breaking Dawn,” also known as the fourth book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga.
The book that got the most positive reviews was “The Revolution: A Manifesto” by Ron Paul. Meyer’s “Twilight” got the most positive reviews for a Kindle book. Of course, Amazon’s Kindle was the best-selling electronic item on its 2008 list. The book most frequently purchased as a gift? It was the first book in Meyer’s series, “Twilight” - the one that became a hit movie when it opened in November. Also in the basket:

“Twilight,” the teen vampire movie from Summit Entertainment, released in mid-November, continued to play well in the face of new competitors. The film ranked No. 12 for the weekend with $4.5 million in ticket sales and a total of about $167 million.
