Review: The Unborn
08 Jan 2009 | Comments (0) |
Variety By PETER DEBRUGE
A Rogue Pictures release presented in association with Michael Bay of a Platinum Dunes/Phantom Four production. Produced by Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller. Executive producers, Jessika Borsiczky Goyer, William Beasley. Directed, written by David S. Goyer. Casey Beldon - Odette Yustman Rabbi Sendak - Gary Oldman Mark - Cam Gigandet Romy - Meagan Good
The most effective horror movies prey on fears percolating just beneath society's surface. And then there's writer-director David S. Goyer's "The Unborn," which conceives a demon unleashed by Nazi experiments in Auschwitz to justify its derivative Japanese-horror-style scares, rather than tapping into the anxiety of a pregnancy suggested by its title. Rogue Pictures, just sold to Relativity Media, should deliver healthy opening-weekend crowds for the PG-13 thriller by stressing Goyer's "The Dark Knight" connection as well as the genetic advantages of young leads Odette Yustman, scene-stealing Meagan Good and "Twilight's" Cam Gigandet. Pic marks a departure for Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes shingle, representing the first original scarefest from an outfit best known for remaking such horror classics as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Amityville Horror." And yet, so familiar are the recycled bits that make up this "The Exorcist"-meets-"The Grudge" combo that Goyer isn't likely to get much credit for all the background research he did trying to flesh out a fresh backstory for such supernatural shenanigans.

'Twilight' villain spends a day filming movie in Atlantic City
11 Dec 2008 | Comments (0) |
Press of Atlantic City by Dan Good
Cam Gigandet isn't a bad guy. Really. Gigandet, an actor, is best known for playing sinister characters - his biggest roles are James, the villain vampire in the teen smash "Twilight," and sleazy surfer Kevin Volchok on "The O.C."
The 26-year-old sure didn't seem mean Wednesday, signing autographs, posing for pictures and chatting up employees at Resorts Atlantic City. He was in town shooting a scene for the upcoming independent movie "Five Star Day." It's his first starring role, but more importantly, a step in a new direction.
"I've played a bad guy for a while now, it seems like every single role, and it's neat to have the opportunity to star and play a character like this one," he said.

Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene reunite; Edi Gathegi goes 3-D; Jackson Rathbone concentrates on music.
When folks like "South Park" and "The Soup" — and even Kathie Lee Gifford — are all talking about your movie, you know you've become a pop-culture phenomenon. And, oh yeah, $70 million doesn't hurt either.
Even the haters wouldn't dare debate the notion that a bright, shining spotlight is now focused on the young stars of "Twilight." The question is: Where do they go from here? On Tuesday (November 25), we took a peek into the immediate future of Robert Pattinson. Looking at his co-stars' calendars, we find a similarly intriguing mix — this time filled with pet projects, 3-D slasher flicks and gender-bending dramas.

Twilight's Villain Says 'Vampires Are Sexy'
20 Nov 2008 | Comments (0) |
People.com by Elaine Aradillas
The supernatural is hot, according to Cam Gigandet, who plays the villainous vampire James in the upcoming flick Twilight.
"Vampires definitely are sexy," he tells PEOPLE. "The mystery that surrounds them is kind of what's sexy."
But the transformation for the film's character wasn't as easy – or sexy – says Gigandet, 26, had to wear red-and-black contacts 12 hours a day.
"We were always so dirty and everything," he says. You always had dirt in your eyes. It was kind of miserable."
As for his character's long locks, Gigandet confesses that it's a wig. In real life, the actor's hair is short, and he only had a month before they started shooting the film so he didn’t have time to grow it longer.
"Hopefully, one day I could actually tough it out and get it longer,” he says. "I kind of love long hair. It's kind of fun.”
The movie, which based on the popular book series by Stephenie Meyer, opens nationwide in theaters Friday.

Movies: Actors mirror fan devotion to 'Twilight'
18 Nov 2008 | Comments (0) |
The Salt Lake Tribune By Sheena McFarland
Fans of Stephenie Meyer's "Twilight" saga have been swept up in the romance of an average teenager and the godlike vampire who falls madly in love with her.
Readers from elementary schools and retirement homes alike feverishly read through the four books. But it didn't stop there: Women (and some men) across the globe started talking to one another about their love of the characters. The contemporary vampire-human love story has blossomed into a worldwide pop cultural phenomenon, seemingly leaving no one untouched -- not even the film's actors.
"We had read all the books by the time we had gotten on set, and we were already fans," said Rachelle Lefevre, who plays a vengeful vampire named Victoria. "We wanted to get it right because we all fell in love with the books."
The movie's young cast soon found they were part of something bigger than just another movie, but part of a cult with a ravenous fan base that was, at first, difficult to handle.

Cam Gigandet negotiating for 'Kerosene Cowboys' lead
Cam Gigandet is in negotiations to play the lead role in Mario Van Peebles' fighter plane thriller "Kerosene Cowboys."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shane West and Rachael Leigh Cook are also negotiating for the film, which is set up at Svarog-Afterburner Films.
"Kerosene Cowboys" is based on the novel by Randy Arrington and focuses on pilots in an elite Navy attack squadron. In true "Top Gun" fashion, Gigandet will play a hotshot pilot, with Cook as his love interest. West would play his friend-turned-nemesis in the Adam Prince-scripted film.
Most recently seen in the MMA drama "Never Back Down," Gigandet has a villainous turn in this fall's highly anticipated "Twilight." He was also famously at least partially responsible for the death of Marissa Cooper on "The O.C."
Cook last popped up in "Nancy Drew" and on episodes of "Psych" and "Ghost Whisperer." She's still best known for "She's All That."
West's credits include "Once and Again," "ER" and the upcoming remake of "The Lodger," which also co-stars Cook.

Cam Gigandet Discusses 'Twilight'
25 Aug 2008 | Comments (0) |
About.com By Rebecca Murray
Cam Gigandet Plays a Bad Vampire in the Film Version of Meyer's 'Twilight' Book
July 31, 2008 - In the Mixed Martial Arts movie Never Back Down, Cam Gigandet played an obnoxious bully who picks on the new kid in town. In Twilight, based on the bestselling vampire novel by Stephenie Meyer, Gigandet handles the part of yet another bad guy. Gigandet tackles the role of James, a vampire whose ability to track his prey is unparalled.
"I am a bad, bad vampire. Well, so everyone else thinks. I think I’m just misunderstood," joked Gigandet during press rounds prior to taking the stage at the 2008 San Diego Comic Con. "Yes, I’m the bad vampire. My sole goal is to basically kill Bella, I guess, and revel in Edward's pain as he watches it."
