Kristen
Stewart and Robert Pattinson The much-anticipated Twilight moviebased
on the novel by Stephanie Meyerwill bring the
enthralling love story of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart)
and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) to the big screen.
With expectations high, costume designer Wendy Chuck
took on the challenge of giving the characters the
right look in the film. "My inspiration came
mostly from the book and I tried to recreate in my
minds eye what I saw when I read it," she says.
Their looks, because of the budget for the film are
all from a mix of stores like Loehmann's, Nordstrom
Rack, Internet outlets and local Portland, OR, shops.
"The only high-end item was Edward's Gucci jacket
for the prom," she says.
Kellan
Lutz, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, Jackson Rathbone A peak into Forks High School reveals Emmett
(Kellan Lutz), Rosalie (Nikki Reed), Alice (Ashley
Greene) and Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) as perpetual
teenagers trying to fit in despite their unique beauty
and mysterious connection with each other. "Alice
is the kooky, artistic one in the book so there's
a lot that's inspired by vintage," says Chuck.
"I used a lot from G-Star for Jasper, he's wearing
a G-star jacket and Levi's and always has Western
boots on."
Robert
Pattinson Breaking away from his first blockbuster role
as Cedric in Harry Potter, Robert Pattinson's portrayal
of Edward is the keystone to the film. His style is
formed by a mix of American Apparel T-shirts, jackets
from G-Star, H&M shirts, Chimala jeans, and A-life
sneakers or vintage boots. "You see blues and
grays for the Cullens," she says. "My original
idea was to keep their palate light but we found that
darker colors enhanced their vampire makeup."
Kristen
Stewart The fragile object of Edwards' affection,
Bella Swan (here in Lucky), is played by Kristen Stewart.
"She's a warmer character and I wanted that to
go against the cold, dampness of the background,"
says Chuck of balancing Bella with the dark world
of the Cullens and gray weather of the Pacific Northwest
setting. "As she gets involved with the Cullens
her wardrobe progresses to cooler blues and gray blues
and some romantic elements like the floral embroidery
on her shirts."
Kellan
Lutz & Nikki Reed Defined by their intimidating gracefulness
and beauty, Emmett (in Express) and Rosalie (in a
Guess jacket with Miss Sixty jeans) display a polished
look while maintaining their high school cover. Instead
of going for the stereotypical goth looks for the
vampires, Chuck says, "We avoided black completely."
Instead she gravitated towards cool blue and gray
tones to convey death and iciness.
Kristen
Stewart & Robert Pattinson A tight budget, filming in rainy Oregon and
unique characters created a challenge for Chuck to
find the right pieces and in some cases she had to
improvise. For example the gray jacket Edward wears
in the film was custom-made. "My job is less
about putting clothes together and more about solving
problems. Twilight has such great characters, though,
which made creating the looks really fun," she
says. and gray tones to convey death and iciness.
